Waterkloof is a very affluent suburb in Pretoria, South Africa in the province of Gauteng. It is named after Waterkloof Farm, the farm upon which the suburb was initially developed in the 19th century. The name Waterkloof is Afrikaans for ‘water ravine’.
Waterkloof is a leafy area that boasts some of the most expensive real estate in Pretoria. The suburb’s name, which might suggest water and abundance, is well-suited to the neighbourhood’s lush environment. The streets of Waterkloof are lined by Jacaranda trees that blossom in luminous hues of purple and violet in the spring time and highlight the entire suburb, so that it looks as if it is a spot of colour on the landscape of Pretoria.
The Pretoria Country Club is a feature of Waterkloof and prides itself on a beautiful 18-hole golf course where visitors and residents of the well-established suburb can enjoy a good round of golf followed by a drink at the clubhouse.
Today, Waterkloof is a very sought-after area with some high-profile residents. For example, it is the base for several ambassadorial residences and is home to some of South Africa’s most well-known celebrities.
Waterkloof, like the celebrities who live there, has also had its time in the limelight, when it was the location of the Dube family house in the Oscar-winning South African film, Tsosti. It is home to some beautiful, big-ticket, hill-top estates that have stunning views of the country's de facto capital. These views include the historic Union Buildings, thus you can see why the area is in-demand.
