Upon entering into the vicinity of Caledon, one is welcomed by the sights of golden barley fields against the backdrop of the imposing Swartberg mountain range
Caledon is found along the N2 national route, situated between Bredasdorp and Arniston. Those in search of some peace and tranquillity travel to the town for a relaxing weekend away. What makes Caledon unique to the many picturesque towns found scattered around the Western Cape, is its world-famous hot springs. The springs were initially discovered and used sparingly by the Khoi-Khoi people, before being commodified by European colonists for its healing properties. A sick house was built in close proximity to the natural phenomena, where the iron-rich water was dubbed a miracle healer for diseased and injured patients. While no longer used in the same fashion, stressed-out individuals find solace and comfort within these warm waters. Those who visit during the balmy summer months can opt for a dip in the cold pool. While those visiting during the chillier season can warm up in the thermal springs. The hot water is warmed by contact with rocks that are heated by pressure from deep underground, reaching a temperature of 49.5 degrees celcius.
While the springs are a major drawcard to Caledon, so too are the indigenous wildflowers. The Caledon Flower Garden, also known as the Venster Kloof Nature Garden, is a hive of indigenous fynbos and vegetation, prolific bird life and scenic, mountain views of Swartberg. During the month of September, horticulturalists visit the town for the annual flower show where blooming varieties of Cape wildflowers are put on display.
Travellers looking to explore the area can drive through the Shaw Pass, this mountain drive traverses through de en Aarde, a valley that connects Hermanus to Caledon. Drivers will enjoy a gentle drive, which may come as a surprise as the roads are mostly gravelled. Upon one’s exploration of the area, travellers are encouraged to take a quick pit stop at Tesselaarsdal, a quaint village known for its livestock and lavender farms.
