Clanwilliam Verblyf
The small town of Clanwilliam is situated on the N7 about three hours’ drive from Cape Town. Its position at the foot of the Cederberg Mountain Range means that Clanwilliam is a must-see destination for those with a fiery love for the outdoors and a desire to escape the city in exchange for a relaxed setting.
The town itself hosts the usual variety of historical buildings, ranging from the old church to the original farm house of the town’s founder. However, it really is the great outdoors that draws people to the area. Just south-east of the town lies the Cederberg Wilderness area, a protected reserve which offers visitors some spectacular hiking trails as well as a small selection of San rock art to marvel over. Another interesting factor to make note of is that Clanwillam is home to the headquarters of the Cape Leopard Trust. Furthermore, it is the only place outside of designated game reserves where South Africa's leopards are officially protected.
Clanwilliam dam, which is found along Olifants River, is also well known in the Western Cape. Having been first established in 1935, its primary purpose was to provide irrigation water to the agricultural region downstream. However, it has since been used for a number of recreational activities. During summertime, individuals flock to the dam to take part in skiing, paddling and other water-based activities. The dam also boasts an abundance of bass, making it a great fishing spot for anglers too.
Nearby one will find Rocklands, a world renowned bouldering area where climbers from all over the world gather in winter to attempt the many bouldering problems.
If you're looking to explore Clanwilliam over a couple of days, the town is renowned for its luxury hotels and self-catering units – bound to make you feel comfortable and at home If you visit Clanwilliam between August and September, there will be an additional surprise in stall, as the spring flowers burst into bloom, colouring the surrounding landscapes in various shades. Finally, tea lovers will be interested to know that the Rooibos Tea House @ Netmar offers five different rooibos infusions, among other things, making the little shop a secret gem for those in the know. If tea is not your thing, the scores of other activities will keep you occupied for hours on end.
