Constantia (CPT) Verblyf - 4
The suburb of Constantia is found in Cape Town and is only 15 kilometres from the CBD. It is a spacious, affluent suburb with extensive greenbelts and large properties. Established by Simon van der Stel in 1684, it’s one of Cape Town’s oldest suburbs and it’s brimming with fascinating history.
Constantia is one of Cape Town’s southern suburbs, inhabited by well-to-do families in large beautiful homes, complete with rolling lawns and swimming pools. The neighbourhood is attractive to locals and tourists because of its rural feel – despite being in the city, there are plenty of farms and stables, enough to make you feel like you’re in the countryside. The farms are particularly noteworthy.
The Constantia Valley is one of the premier wine-growing regions in the Cape Winelands and vineyards have been cultivated there for hundreds of years. Its long history in the business gives the Constantia wine estates a certain prestige and the Constantia wine route is an exceedingly popular attraction. The route incorporates famous wineries such as Steenberg, Groot Constantia, Constantia Uitsig and Klein Constantia – a compact route close to town.
Although you wouldn’t guess so, Constantia also plays an important role in Cape Town’s Islamic history. When the Dutch East India Company completed their conquest of Sumatra, they captured some very influential Muslims, among them, Sheik Abdurachman Matebe Shah. He was banished to Constantia upon arrival at the Cape, where he eventually died. His Kramat (tomb) can still be seen at the gates to the Klein Constantia wine farm.
Constantia is watched over by the Constantiaberg Mountains, and the Table Mountain National Park. For active visitors, the mountain provides many scenic hikes, while the greenbelts offer flatter paths to traverse. When you’re ‘exercised out’, you can head for a wine tasting or one of the superb restaurants in the area.
Constantia is a nice place to base yourself while in Cape Town as not only is it close to the city centre and its attractions, the surfing mecca of Muizenberg and the boho fishing village of Kalk Bay are also a stone’s throw away so in many lights, you get the best of both worlds.
