Newlands (CPT) Verblyf
Newlands is an upmarket suburb located at the foot of Table Mountain, in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. This leafy suburb lies on the perimeter of Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, boasting amazing views. It is conveniently located, only 15 minutes’ from the centre of Cape Town city. The suburb is popular with families, due to there being a number of well-respected schools in the area.
Newlands is the home of rugby and cricket in Cape Town, since both the renowned Newlands Cricket Ground and the Newlands Rugby Stadium are located here. Next to the rugby stadium, the original Ohlsson's Cape Breweries can still be found. Recently declared a historic monument, the original water wheel used to grind the grain for the brewery has been preserved here.
Outdoor lovers will enjoy Newlands forest, which is a great open space in which to walk the dogs, go on an adventure trail and generally enjoy nature. The iconic Kirstenbosch Gardens is right nearby and can be reached on foot. A trip to the Newlands swimming pool with the kids is a must on those hot summer days.
For art lovers, a trip to the Montebello Design Centre is recommended – the centre houses a sculpture garden, a number of local art studios, a craft shop and the first contemporary Bushman Gallery.
Newlands is also well known for its excellent restaurants and foodie culture, offering everything from casual coffee shops and bistros to fine dining establishments. Forries is a traditional pub with a big reputation – it is a favourite for many visiting the area, and ‘the’ spot to watch a game and have a drink.
Newlands epitomes the traditional experience of the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, and the many hotels in the area makes for the perfect base for a trip to Cape Town.
