Cradock Unterkünfte
Cradock is a small town in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It lies inland and forms the 3rd point of a triangle in which the other two points are Port Elizabeth (to the south) and East London (to the south east). Cradock’s bustling nature is due to the fact that it is hub of a successful farming region. It is widely acknowledged as a major centre of South Africa’s wool industry and the area is also known for its mohair production. Beef and dairy cows as well as Lucerne are farmed in the area.
The very first inhabitants of the Cradock area were the Khoi herders and later the Xhosa moved into the area too. The Xhosa are the main tribal group in the area to this day. While the Xhosa and the Khoi people lived in the area for many years prior, Cradock was only established as a town in 1812. It was selected as a magisterial seat for the region thanks to its strategic location in the frontier wars between the British and the Xhosa.
Today Cradock is a thriving little town and is a lovely place to visit with many interesting attractions in and around town. Among them are the impressive Dutch Reformed Church and Die Tuishuise. The latter is a series of old houses to be found on Market Street which have been returned to their former mid-Victorian glory thanks to caring refurbishments. A stroll down this street provides a glimpse into the Cradock of yesteryear.
The Olive Schreiner House Museum provides insight into the early years of this world-renowned author, and the Mountain Zebra National Park outside town saved these mammals from extinction in the mid-1900’s. Today you can view stunning scenery and a variety of birds and animals in the park.

Cradock
Though it has seen better days with respect to its infrastructure, especially the roads, Cradock remains a town with an interesting history. It is probably most famous (in modern times) for the story of 'The Cradock Four'.
It is one of the Cape's chief centres of the wool industry.
We took an interest in Schreiner House where the author of The Story of an African Farm lived as a young girl. The house, which is located at 9 Cross Street and is a satellite of the National English Literary Museum, contains a modern set of exhibitions portraying the life of Olive Schreiner.
Cradock had a name change in 2022. It has officially been renamed Nxuba.

It was our second time in Cradock, we knew where all the shops were and the locals were friendly as usual. The only bad thing was the condition of the roads.

Cradock is a beautiful Karoo town and well worth a visit. It is a convenient place to break the long journey between the Eastern Cape and Gauteng. It has numerous excellent guesthouses and a choice of good restaurants too.
