Somerset East Unterkünfte
The town of Somerset East is situated in the Cacadu area of the Eastern Cape Province. It lies at the foot of a stunning mountain range, giving the town an exceptional setting. It is surrounded by nature and thus there is always plenty to keep you busy on a visit to Somerset East.
The town was initially established in 1825 after Lorde Charles Somerset, then Governor of the Cape Colony, sent a botanist to assess the entire Cape Colony for potential sites where produce could be cultivated and supplied to the military that was guarding the frontier.
The prospector identified the area at the bottom of the Boschberg mountains and the government wasted no time in buying a farm there. Later the farm was divided into ervin and the town was officially established in 1825, and named Somerset. In 1857 it was renamed Somerset East to differentiate it from Somerset West (in the Western Cape).
Today Somerset East is a picturesque little town which still has some of the original farm buildings. From anywhere within the town one can glimpse the beautiful Boschberg Mountains looming down, and if you leave the bounds of the town you will discover a wealth of activities.
The town lies on the Eastern Cape’s Blue Crane Tourist Route, and like the name may suggest, the area is a great destination for birding. Just outside of town are numerous nature reserves and plenty of hiking routes.
There are also numerous dams nearby where one can go trout fishing for brown and rainbow trout, and the town’s 9-hole golf course is said to be among the prettiest in the province.
