De Aar Verblyf

De Aar is a relatively small town in the heart of the arid but beautiful Great Karoo. It is situated in the Northern Cape province of South Africa and holds a strategic position both in the present and in the past. Despite its unforgiving climate and lack of sparkling attractions, there are many aspects which could endear the town to you.

The town, whose population is just above 30 000, is to be found on the N4 (a highway jutting off from the major N1 route) between Britstown and Hanover (arguably the most central settlement in South Africa). The climate there is harsh, thanks to the desert-like conditions. It experiences extremely hot summers, the height of which fall in January, and icy cold winters, occurring in June.

De Aar was established on a farm of the same name, in the early 1900’s, with the first mayor being elected in 1907. Its name De Aar means ‘The Artery’, which is a reference to the underground water supply which hydrates the town.

The outskirts of town are characterised by livestock farms, while wool production is also big business there. These endeavours are two of the settlement’s most significant economic contributors, but its strategic location on the railway and its role as a commercial distribution centre also have their roles to play in De Aar’s continued existence.  History tells us that De Aar was also strategically important to the British in the bygone days of the second Anglo-Boer War.

These days there is a Garden of Remembrance for the fallen British soldiers who fought in that war, and (seemingly) unrelated, a variety of sites where Khoisan rock art can be observed are situated nearby. Perhaps surprisingly, De Aar is also popular among para-gliders and hang-gliders, as a place where many records in these respective disciplines have been broken.
