Hanover Verblyf

Hanover is a very tiny town in the interior of South Africa. Most of the town’s economic activity is centred on the farming of merino sheep, and besides that, not a lot goes on there. The settlement’s claim to fame is quite unique though, in that it is said to be the most centrally located town in South Africa.

It is equidistant from Durban in KwaZulu Natal, Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, Cape Town in the Western Cape, Upington in the Northern Cape and Johannesburg in Gauteng. It also forms the base of an arc connecting Colesburg, De Aar and Middelburg. The town lies at an intersection between the N2 and the N4 highways, in the heart of the Klein (little) Karoo, making it pretty well-connected.

One aspect of the town which attracts visitors is that it was once home to the internationally acclaimed author (and women’s rights pioneer), Olive Schreiner. The house she shared with her husband between 1900 and 1907 still stands and has even been declared a National Monument. The cottage is charming not only for being Schreiner’s home, but also because it is a typical example of Karoo architecture, with a tin roof, a veranda and the characteristic ‘broekie lace’ – cast iron decorations.

For a picturesque view of the little town and the sweeping Karoo landscape, climb the Traapieskop Mountain (admittedly more of a hill). From the top you’ll be given a different perspective of the area and inadvertently check out the site of South Africa’s first astronomical observatory.

In the heart of town, an oddity is the fountain. Surprisingly, the fountain is built on a natural spring which gurgles up to 200 000 litres of water a day.

Hanover, thanks to its undoubtedly central location, is a favoured stop over point for those driving across South Africa.
