De Kelders Unterkünfte
The village of De Kelders is named for the unique underground caves located in the cliffs in the little town. The name means ‘The Cellars’ in Dutch and it’s easy to deduce why they made the association between the caves and cellars, given the similarity between the two types of underground spaces.
You will find De Kelders 19 kilometres from Stanford, in between the slightly larger fishing village of Gansbaai and the renowned eco-tourism destination of Hermanus. It is located on Walker Bay, the same bay which attracts the whales for which Hermanus is so famous. In fact, the whale watching at De Kelders is arguably just as from Hermanus. If you arrive in whale season (between June and September) you will be assured of great sightings just off the shore, of whales breaching, slapping their tails and blowing through their spouts.
De Kelders is largely a holiday town, with many holiday houses standing empty for much of the year. This lends it either a peaceful or deserted air, depending on how you look at it. There are a few general dealers in town and the odd restaurant but it is best to do any serious shopping in the neighbouring towns such as Gansbaai.
Speaking Gansbaai, it’s worth it to note that this is widely acknowledged as one of the best shark-cage diving destinations in South Africa. If you’re looking for a little adrenaline to break up your lazy De Kelders weekend, definitely visit Gansbaai.
The Walker Bay Nature Reserve is also worthy of your attention. It stretches 25 kilometres from Stanford to Hermanus and offers great swimming, hiking and fishing as well as a variety of endemic fynbos species and numerous mammals such as grysbok, duiker and the cape clawless otter.
De Kelders is a great weekend destination not least for its idyllic setting and range of activities nearby. It is also close to Cape Town, reached by car in roughly 2 hours.
