Diaz Beach is an affluent suburb in the seaside town of Mossel Bay in the Western Cape. While Mossel Bay is a popular tourist spot, Diaz Beach is a particularly popular part of the town for its great view of the ocean and proximity to many of Mossel Bay’s best attractions.
Mossel Bay has a population of roughly 30 000 and is located on the famous Garden Route, about 400 kilometres from Cape Town. Being located in this part of South Africa means it is blessed with a mild climate – warm days which are mostly sunny. Staying in Diaz Beach allows one to take advantage of this good weather.
The area is named after the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Diaz who landed on Mossel Bay’s shores in 1488. It boasts a 3 kilometre stretch of beach which is popular for swimming and walking and which has a well-serviced ablution block. It is close to many attractions such as Diaz Beach Water World, a golf course, the Cape St Blaize lighthouse, Mossel Bay’s other beaches and a variety of rewarding hiking trails. Mossel Bay’s famous Maritime Museum, which provides insights into the time of Diaz, is also nearby.
Mossel Bay is still a relatively small town, but it is well-developed none-the-less. There are a number of restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores and even shopping malls to keep you entertained during the midday heat of summer days and the occasional rainy spells.
Mossel Bay is a gateway of sorts to the rest of the Garden Route, and makes a good stop on a longer East Coast road trip, but is also a great destination in itself.
