Dinokeng North Accommodatie

The region of Dinokeng is located in the north eastern part of Gauteng and is one of the province’s most attractive tourist areas. Gauteng is generally known as a hotspot for business deals, being South Africa’s main commercial hub, but gets much less attention from leisure travellers. Tourists in South Africa prefer to visit the game reserves of neighbouring Limpopo and Mpumalanga or the beaches of KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape. Dinokeng is an initiative by the Gauteng provincial government to increase tourism in the area and promote economic development as a result.

Dinokeng can be roughly divided in two, Dinokeng North and Dinokeng South. Dinokeng North is characterised by sandy bushveld and arguably one of the best climates in the world. Summer days (December to March) are warm and sunny with the occasional quick afternoon down pour, while winters are sunny, cool and dry.

The northern part of Dinokeng is home to two major attractions, namely the Rust de Winter Nature Reserve and the Dinokeng Game Reserve. The game reserve is roughly 80 kilometres from Pretoria and 130 kilometres from Johannesburg. It is a Gauteng’s only big 5 reserve and animals roam freely in their natural habitat, much the same as they did years ago.

The Rust de Winter Nature Reserve is a 1650 hectare reserve which is renowned for bass fishing. The variety of woodland habitat and marshlands also mean that birding in the reserve is exceptional. Another thing to do in Dinokeng North is take a bicycle township tour of Mandela Village in Hammanskraal near Rust de Winter.

Dinokeng North is dotted with accommodation options to suit everyone, from lodges within the Dinokeng reserve to bed and breakfasts near the Rust de Winter dam. Perhaps the best part is that all this and more is right on Johannesburg and Pretoria’s doorsteps!
