Accommodation near Rust de Winter Nature Reserve
Rust de Winter Nature Reserve is aninitiative of the Gauteng Provincial Government and is located an hour’s drive north of Gauteng’s big cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria, in the province of Limpopo. It is easily accessible thanks to the N1 highway and lies en route toother larger reserves like Kruger National Park and the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve as well South Africa’s neighbours, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique.
Rust de Winter covers 1 650 hectares and surrounds the Rust de Winter Dam – one of the reserve’s major attractions. The dam, which was built in 1920, can hold 28 million cubed metres of water and is used primarily for irrigation and recreational purposes.
While the dam acts as a beautiful centrepiece, the rest of the reserve is really quite stunning too. The reserve is home to a reasonably large variety of landscapes, which in turn provide varied habitats for all the birds, insects and other animals which inhabit the area. Woodlands are among the dominant vegetation type with leaved woodland, rocky woodland slopes and mixed woodland all featuring in addition to riverine forest and alluvial acacia veld.
The flora variety here provides a home to over 400 bird species, including a startling number of water birds. As a result, Rust de Winter Nature Reserve is well known as a birding hotspot. There is plenty of game too, from zebra, duiker, bushpig, aardvark and waterbuck, tokudu, nyala, otters and even crocodiles, the latter two inhabiting the ElandsRiver.
The reserve boasts a lovely visitors’ area next to the dam, where in addition to bird and game watching, you can also try your hand at angling or a variety of water sports.
