Douglas Verblyf

Douglas is one of those places which come as a complete surprise as one travels along the R357 through the dusty, flat, largely featureless landscape of the Northern Cape in South Africa. It is a tiny town located pretty well bang in the centre of the country, officially within in the borders of South Africa’s most arid province.

Douglas was initially founded as an even tinier settlement than it is now in 1848, on the farm ‘Backhouse’, which was owned by the local reverend of the church. In 1867 a group of Europeans who’d migrated from Griqualand were awarded the right to establish a town, which is precisely what they did.

Today, passing through it, travellers are struck by the town’s oasis-like quality. In the middle of a very dry area, they are all of a sudden confronted by an extraordinarily fertile region of land, supporting a thriving agricultural community. The reason for all this that Douglas lies at the confluence of two of South Africa’s most important rivers, namely the Vaal River and the Orange (Gariep) River. These two provide more than enough water and nutrients for the surrounding land that it is no surprise there is so much agricultural activity.

Douglas is only 100 kilometres from Kimberley, home to the Big Hole – an open cast diamond mine, and other attractions, but it does have a few things to offer in its own right. The Douglas Wine Cellar is a surprising but pleasing presence in the area, and ‘Die Neus’ (The Nose) is a lovely spot celebrating the confluence of the 2 mighty rivers.

The Vaal is home to some popular fish species, which makes Douglas a great place for fishing fanatics to hunker down for some secluded fishing, and the myriad bird species which are attracted to the lush river banks will in turn appeal to bird watchers.
