Kathu Verblyf
Kathu is known as the iron-ore capital of the Northern Cape. It is a small town located in the heart of one of the driest provinces in South Africa. It lies roughly halfway between Upington and Vryberg, with a 2 hour car commute to each one respectively, and is about a 3 hour drive from Kimberley. By first-impression standards, Kathu doesn’t look like much – a mining town set in a semi-arid landscape - but as is often the case, there is more to this little town than meets the eye.
The town was
established in the late 1960’s and continued to develop into the early 1970’s. It
owes its existence, then and now, to the open cast iron mines in the Kalahari area. Iron mining is such a serious business here that unassuming little Kathu is home to one of the
largest open-cast iron mines in the world and the trains which transport the extracted iron from Kathu to
Saldanha on the
West Coast are among the longest freight trains in the world.
Kathu is not all about iron mines though. The name ‘Kathu’ means ‘town under the trees’, which is a reference to the 4000 hectare camel thorn forest found just outside town. Camel thorn trees are part of the acacia family, and this forest forms a habitat for a variety of birds and other species, many of which are either on the red data list, endemic and/or protected. The forest is important enough that it was declared a natural heritage site in 1995.
In Kathu there is a golf course and sports complex but the fun is just outside the town, where you’ll find a well-stocked game reserve and numerous archaeological sites which have turned up specimen from the stone ages. The great Kalahari is also on its doorstep.
