Douglasdale Verblyf
Douglasdale is a wealthy residential suburb in northern Johannesburg. It makes the ideal place to base yourself whether travelling for business or leisure, thanks to its accessibility and the pleasant ambience. The area is close to the heart of Sandton, one of Johannesburg’s important commercial centres, which also offers plenty to enthral the tourist.
Douglasdale was developed on a farm of the same name, which was owned by a Scottish couple named Mary, and the farm’s namesake, Thomas Douglas. The farm dates back to 1905, and the original farmhouse, built that same year, is today one of the oldest buildings in the area. Over the years the couple developed a commercial dairy enterprise out of a hobby, and the Douglasdale dairy still provides Gauteng with a small percentage of its dairy needs. Of particular interest to families is that the dairy is open for tours. Adults and children can view the entire process, from udder to bottle and later kids can bottle-feed the calves.
In neighbouring Bryanston, Douglasdale visitors and residents can visit the Bryanston Organic Market, proudly Johannesburg’s premier market of its kind. You can find all sorts there from the obvious organic produce to delicious meals and beautiful crafts and art works.
The heart of Sandton with its commercial and financial districts is not far either, and if you are visiting the big city, you may as well adopt the attitude of ‘when in Rome’, and visit Sandton City, the largest shopping mall in Southern Africa. From Sandton you can also take very enlightening tours of the Alexandra township, as well as many more activities.
