Lonehill Verblyf
Lonehill is a suburb of Sandton, in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg in Gauteng. It is situated on a solitary hill which stands out against the flat landscape of Gauteng, hence the suburb’s name.
Lonehill is home to a nature reserve which protects a sliver of nature in amongst the concrete jungle that is Johannesburg. The area provides a peek into the past, to the time before Johannesburg was urbanised. Back then, the area was characterised by extensive grassland, boulders, and small streams and strewn with a variety of fauna and flora species.
In the Lonehill Nature Reserve there is a little koppie (small hill) called the Lonehill Koppie. It is a stack of rocks with one single boulder resting on the top. It is surrounded by shrubbery, rocky veld and streams, 28 kilometres from the city centre, and is one of the few hills in this part of Johannesburg. Here hikers enjoy walks and the residents enjoy picnics on weekends. The experience of walking on the koppie is unique in Johannesburg thanks to the lack of crowds.
From the Lonehill Koppie, one has a clear view of the Kyalami Castle, also known as the Michael Jackson Castle due to the king of pop's interest in it as a residence a few years back. The castle is regarded as one of the true 'oddities' of the city. It became a Church of Scientology in 2008.
Lonehill loch, also located in Lonehill, is a favourite destination among the suburb’s locals. Taking long strolls to the dam is a popular weekend activity.
