Dundee Logement

The coal deposit-rich town of Dundee is in a valley of the Biggarsberg Mountains in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. It is surrounded by the historical Indumeni and Mpati Mountains, both of which are Zulu names. It is 350 kilometres from Durban and only 30 minutes from the neighbouring town of Ladysmith.

This town is significant in the modern landscape of South Africa because it is one of the most productive coal mining towns in the country. It also boasts a wealth of local heritage such as several caves and shelters which served as homes to the nomadic San people who initially inhabited the region.

Dundee has a sub-tropical highland climate which results in pleasantly warm summers and cool, dry winters. The main attraction of the town of Dundee is the Talana Museum which is a preserved farm commemorating the Anglo-Boer War. It also provides a history of coal mining in Dundee. The Talana Hill battlefield, where the first shots of the war were fired, is just outside of town and can be visited independently. Dundee is 1,5 hours from Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift, which are both famous battle sites of the Anglo Boer War.

Dundee was established in 1882, after the Boer farmers residing in the area discovered coal. Its pioneer was a Scottish settler by the name of Peter Smith. Dundee was established on a farm that Smith bought from a Voortrekker. It was originally named Talana Farm, before Smith renamed it Dundee, in honour of his hometown in Scotland, after the town was established.
