Van Reenens Pass Logement
Van Reenen’s Pass refers to a section of the large N3 highway which connects Johannesburg in Gauteng and Durban in KwaZulu Natal. The pass, which reaches an altitude of 1768 metres at its highest point, is among the busiest transport links in South Africa and is usually buzzing with trucks, busses and smaller vehicles. It is also one of the most spectacular sections of the N3 highway dishing up breath-taking vistas for its full 36,3 kilometres.
The section of the N3 occupied by the Van Reenen’s Pass crosses the Drakensberg Mountains and is situated between the gorgeous town of Ladysmith in northern KwaZulu Natal, and Harrismith in the Free State Province. The entire route is dotted with historical sites, awe-inspiring lookout points and some lovely farmlands.
The pass is named after Frans Van Reenen, who farmed at the base of the pass. He owned the farm on which the town of Van Reenen was established and was responsible for planning the route which Van Reenen’s Pass takes. When the pass was initially built, it was used primarily by farmers moving their herds from the interior to the coast and back again. Later it was used to deliver supplies to the gold mines in the interior.
Today, one of the most note-worthy sights along the pass includes Windy Corner – a lookout point which has views of the mountains as well as KwaZulu Natal’s Anglo-Boer Battlefield Route in the distance. The famous Barefoot Lady/ Kaalvoet Vrou statue commemorates Susanna Smit, the sister of a Boer leader, who famously pronounced that she would rather hike barefoot over the pass back to the Free State than stay in KwaZulu Natal under British rule. The Llandaff Oratary is widely considered the smallest Catholic Church in the world, built by a father in tribute to his son.
These sights and many more await you on Van Reenen’s Pass, but make sure that you drive carefully as the pass is notorious for trucking accidents.

This place is the beauty of God's paintbrush. You just can't get enough of it. Last year we had it all covered in snow and this year it is just all the landscape of brown grey and green. So lovely.
