Elands Bay Unterkünfte
Elands Bay is but one of the many fishing towns dotted along the West Coast of South Africa, and yet however similar it may sound, is a unique destination. The town lies right on the coast, about 200 kilometres north of Cape Town. It is nestled on a (relatively) narrow strip of land between the icy Atlantic Ocean and a small mountain range which segregates it from the interior.
Elands Bay, or Elandsbaai as it is also known, is home to a small fishing community, one that has been there since the town’s inception. The little settlement lays claim to a long white beach as well as the Verlorenvlei, one of the biggest estuaries on the Cape West Coast and one given international importance by the Ramsar Convention. It is houses a diverse range of species which are dependent on its ecosystem, among them numerous birds.
Birdlife is prolific in Elands Bay with 232 species present, including flamingos and pelicans. This is one of the quiet attractions of the town. Another is the surfing. The beach at Elands, as it’s affectionately known, boasts a left hand break which is in high demand, and it’s for this reason that Elands Bay has been a bona fide surfing destination for decades.
While less part of Elands’ identity, rock climbing, mountain biking and fishing are all past times to be enjoyed there. And what would a West Coast town be if not for the opportunity of diving for some crayfish (in season, with a license) or spotting some whales.
Despite its popularity within the surfing fraternity, and its undeniable charm as a quaint village in spectacular surroundings, Elands Bay has somehow managed to avoid the keen glare of Cape Town’s weekend holiday set. Instead it remains a humble little town, unaware of its own blinding charms. You’d do well to visit.

It's SUCH a Blessing!! I took Pam up, to 'introduce' her to the West Coast. I really wanted to spoil her & we both needed a break desperately. When we got to Draaihoek Lodge & Restaurant, we knew this is exactly what we needed - the peace, tranquility and the wide open expanse of land & sea, with its never ending beach, was breathtaking. Pam Loved it ;-) I also enjoyed the privacy of our unit.
