Waterval Boven Unterkünfte
Waterval Boven is a holiday town in the South African province of Mpumalanga. It lies on the N14 highway between Witbank and Komatipoort (the border town with southern Mozambique). The town’s setting is conducive to many outdoor adventures as well as just passing a few days in absolute peace and quiet.
Waterval Boven is tucked into the crooks of the Drakensberg Mountains, and rests on the edge of the escarpment. It lies on the banks of the Elands River, just above the Elands waterfall (hence the name Waterval Boven, which means ‘above the waterfall’). A few kilometres downstream you will find the sister town of Waterval Onder.
Waterval Boven was established in 1898 as a railway depot for the train line which connected Pretoria to Maputo in Mozambique. It was named, rather uncreatively by the Dutch who constructed the town. While it is largely known as Waterval Boven to this day, its official name in the new South Africa is actually Emgwenya.
Given its mountainous setting, Waterval Boven is the ideal place to set off into the wilderness on a hike, and there are many trails to choose from. Horse riding is also a popular past time as is fishing. The river and many dams in the area are excellent fly-fishing and trout fishing spots, and the town’s fishing shop not only sells fishing tackle but the staff are happy to offer advice and share stories.
Waterval Boven also happens to be a renowned rock-climbing destination, especially among sport climbers. For a more sedate activity you can take the 30 minute train ride to Waterval Onder or explore some of the many historical sites in the area, many of which have been declared heritage sites.
