Ermelo Logement
The town of Ermelo is situated in southern Mpumalanga, on the provinces Highveld. The region is known for its combination of grassland and wetland landscapes and is a prolific farming and mining area. The town is extremely well-connected being situated at the meeting point between the N2, N11 and N17 and one can get to Johannesburg, Swaziland or Durban quite easily from Ermelo.
The town was established at the site of a Dutch Reformed Church, in the early 1970’s. It was established by the church reverend, who named the town after Ermelo in the Netherlands, in honour of his spiritual mentor, who was born in the Dutch town. After growing into a recognised settlement it was almost completely destroyed during the second Anglo Boer War, but was revitalised with a somewhat different character some years later.
The Ermelo of today is the centre of a farming and mining community. Anthracite, coal and torbanite are mined in the area while the mixed farming covers everything from beans, Lucerne and potatoes to cattle, pigs and maize. It seems that the mild climate (which rarely inflicts temperatures over 25 degrees or below 0 degrees on the area) with a little summer rainfall makes ideal circumstances for a range of produce.
Not known for its tourism, there are never the less some things which could be considered tourist attractions in the area. These include an ancient settlement built by the Legoya people, which dates back to 1400 and the Paul Kruger Bridge over the Vaal River. When the bridge was constructed, its 124 meter height made it one of the largest bridges in the then-Transvaal. Today it is a national monument.
There are also dams in the area which offer picnic spots, opportunities for fishing and bird watching, and a number of San rock art sites are dotted around the countryside too.
