Gaborone or ‘Gabs’ as it referred to by the locals, is the capital and largest city of Botswana. Since its official establishment in the 1960’s, Gaborone is considered one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. Today, it boasts a population of 300 000 residents, a far cry from the small one-horse town that it once was.
Gaborone, which means ‘it is not unbecoming’, was named after the Botswanian chief, Kgosi Gaborone. The chief ruled over the region until he was forced to surrender in 1895 when colonialist Cecil John Rhodes invaded the land.
Gaborone is situated to the south-east of Botswana and is a 15-kilometre drive from the South African border. With many Botswana residents commuting to the Gaborone for work, the city is multi-lingual; with Setswana, English and Kgalagadi being the main languages that are spoken.
Gaborone is the economic hub of the country. A long strip of commercial businesses and the government headquarters referred to as ‘the mall’ are found at the centre. The area is also home to the South African Development Community (SADC). The long-term goals of the SADC are to eradicate poverty through job creation and to instil nationwide peace and security.
Travelling businessmen who are looking to find affordable accommodation can find a myriad of lavish hotels and cosy guesthouses in the city centre.
Visitors to the Gaborone often comment on the city’s pleasant sub-tropical climate. During summer, the days are hot and the nights are cool while the winters are characterised by balmy days and frosty evenings.
The gallery lies adjacent to the Botswana National Botanical Garden, a landmark that was opened up to the public in 2007. The garden harbours 90% of the country’s indigenous plant life.
Each year, lovers of arts and culture flock to the highly-anticipated Maitisong Festival. The seven-day event, which was launched in 1987, holds a myriad of outdoor concerts, plays, films and art exhibitions.
