Swartruggens Logement
Swartruggens is a farming town in the North West Province of South Africa. Founded on the farm Brakfontein, next to the Elands River in 1875, it makes a convenient over-night stop on the way to Botswana, as well as a low key destination that’s not too far from Johannesburg. Furthermore, the town is just 56 kilometres west of Rustenburg and is surrounded by numerous game reserves.
Swartruggens, which means ‘black ridges’ in Afrikaans, is named after the black-topped hills which surround the area. These hills, or small mountains, provide many of the hiking opportunities which are present in the area, and are the perfect way to experience the great outdoors, especially since the area offers a distinctly African landscape.
While Swartruggens is fairly docile these days, with a slow pace of life and decidedly rural atmosphere, it has experienced moments of frenetic activity in its history. In 1932 for example, diamonds were discovered in the vicinity and there was, as you can imagine, a flurry of activity as prospectors and mining companies showed up to assess the opportunities. There are still a couple of diamond mines and digging sites in operation today, but there is no doubt that the town’s economy is much more invested in cattle farming.
While there isn’t huge emphasis put on tourism in the town, that’s not say that there isn’t anything to keep visitors occupied. Apart from hiking, both the Lindleyspoort and Swartruggens Dams are good for fishing and also provide a haven for many bird species. A little further afield are various big 5 game reserves too, such as Pilanesburg, Madikwe and Tulane.
