Haga Haga – so nice you have to say it twice, as the tagline goes, and as cheesy as it no doubt is, this little rhyme holds a surprising amount of truth. Haga Haga may be small and as yet undiscovered by mass tourism, but there is no doubt that everyone who has set foot in this tiny settlement falls for it instantly, and they fall for it hard!
The teeny tiny town is situated on the Amatola Coast of the Eastern Cape, one of the most rural, but also one of the most picturesque provinces in South Africa. You’ll find it just 60 kilometres from East London, and yet the landscape, lifestyle and miniscule population give one the sense of being much further from the city.
Haga Haga is the ideal beach location, and makes the perfect destination for a family vacation. The little clump of houses which constitutes the town lies at the southern end of a beautiful golden sand beach. For those who know about it, it is a favourite South African beach for being wide, with warm Indian Ocean temperatures throughout the year and having the warm, shallow Haga Haga River mouth at the one end. The beach is long enough for some excellent beach walks and the rock pools are interesting to explore. The lagoon on the other hand is nice for paddle-skiing and boating.
Part of the place’s charm is that it is so utterly devoid of amenities. There is one tiny convenience store in the town itself which has very short opening hours, and the only place where you can order a meal is at the Haga Haga Hotel, somewhat of an institution in the area. Just outside of town is another institution – Ninky Noo’s Pub, a basic eatery serving up pub grub and where patrons share the space with a large sheep who has a penchant or beer.
