Harrismith Verblyf
The town of Harrismith is located in the Free State province of South Africa. It is positioned on a particularly significant transport route, that is, the N3 and is more or less the half-way point between Johannesburg and Durban. Furthermore, it also serves as the junction between the N3 and the N5, which connects Bloemfontein to its neighbours further north. Speaking about Harrismith’s strategic location however doesn’t do the town justice. It is a neat, pretty town surrounded by interesting landscapes and numerous nature reserves and provides the weary traveller with many fine hotel or self-catering accommodation options.
The town, which was initially laid out by Robert Moffat, moved to its present location in 1850 and really came into its own during the Kimberley diamond rush, where it flourished as an important stop-over and transport link between Kimberley, Joburg and Durban. It was during this period when hotels, general dealers and public buildings sprung up cementing the settlement’s status as a town.
Today Harrismith still acts as a stop-over for passing trucks and is one of the 5 wool-producing regions in South Africa. It is also an elegant little place filled with 19th century sandstone buildings, such as the Harrismith Town Hall, which has been declared a National Monument.
Surrounding Harrismith are numerous mesas (small, flat-topped mountains) and buttes (smaller isolated hills). Platberg is the most talked-about landscape feature and is home to the Platberg Nature Reserve, a popular retreat for hikers and mountain bikers and a haven for buck such as eland and black wildebeest.
Within an easy drive of Harrismith, you can also explore the Golden Gate Highlands National Park (home to endangered vulture species), the UKhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site (famed for its unique ecology and wealth of San rock art) and Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve. The Sterkfontein Dam is a popular hang-out among water-sport fanatics, especially wind-surfers.
If you decide to spend some time staying in Harrismith, tee off at the Harrismith Golf Course, arguably the 3rd oldest course in South Africa.
Enjoy your stay in Harrismith!

Harrismith
Harrismith is in need of some serious attention. The roads are terribly pot holed. We stayed the night as we ran the Harrismith Mountain Race and wanted to travel to Clarens and Fouriesburg the next day. Ordinarily we wouldn't stay in Harrismith.

Harrismith
We didn't spend a lot of time in Harrismith, but we found it very convenient in terms of shops and facilities available for tourists. Definitively a place we would like to come back and great location because it is close to the Drakensberg, which is why we chose it.
