Northern Drakensberg Verblyf
The Drakensberg is a spectacular mountain range which spans 200 kilometres and reaches heights of over 3000 metres. The Northern Drakensberg refers to a section of the mountain which is found in KwaZulu Natal. At this point, the mountains soaring basalt peaks and softer sandstone slopes form a semi-circular boundary between South Africa and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. It is one of the most beautiful and dramatic boundaries one can imagine.
KwaZulu Natal is the traditional home of the Zulu people, who named the mountain Ukhahlamba which means barrier of spears. This is where the name for the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg National Park comes from. The reserve protects the myriad plant and animal species found on the mountain’s slopes, as well as the many San rock art paintings you’ll find there. The area is home to such a unique biodiversity that it has been named a World Heritage Site.
KwaZulu Natal’s largest river, the Tugela has its origins in the Northern Drakensberg, and reaching the point where it plunges 950 metres over the edge of the Mont-aux-Sources Plateau is a serious goal for many hikers. Other areas which make up the Northern Drakensberg range include sites such as the Amphitheatre, the Saddle, Mnweni Valley and Singati. All of these points offer scenery which will take your breath away.
In the winter, the plateaus become covered in snow and ice, making it an attractive destination for ice-climbing. The sheer cliffs are a welcome challenge for rock climbers and everyone feels inspired when the many flower species burst into bloom in spring.
Towns and cities near the Northern Drakensberg include Ladysmith, Newcastle, Dundee, Ulundi and Ixopo, all of which can make good bases for exploring this magical mountain.
