Henties Bay Verblyf

Henties Bay, which is also known as Hentiesbaai (the Afrikaans version of the name), is a popular holiday town in the west of Namibia. It lies on the coast in the Erongo region of the country and shares the stark beauty of the coastal desert landscape which constitutes much of Namibia. Much of the town’s attraction is based on natural sights and outdoor activities. It is located 70 kilometres north of Swakopmund a much larger seaside settlement.

Henties Bay is named after Major Hendrick ‘Hentie’ van der Merwe, who discovered the spot in 1929. The story goes that he and a small team were out hunting rhino, because an American museum was offering to pay for a rhino skeleton. Being in the Namib Desert though, the party found that they had run out of water. They headed toward the coast in the hopes of finding a water source and they were in luck.

A tributary of the Omaruru River gave itself away with the abundant reeds growing there. Upon discovering the ‘fountain’, Hentie decided that he liked the area so much that he would return. He did so a year later and built himself a small house near the river bed, and soon after the area became known as Henties Bay.

Today, the main town is just north of the ‘fountain’, which can still be visited today, and presents as much of an oasis now as it ever did. More popular activities in the area however are angling and overlanding. The bay is known to be particularly rich with fish thus anglers enjoy both big catches and striking scenery when fishing there.

The area is popular among 4x4-ers because it is possible to drive on the beach and dunes, although there is no doubt that this is not ideal for the environment.

Just 70 kilometres to the north of town is the Cape Columbine Seal Colony, which is a sight to behold, as many people will attest.
