Hilton Unterkünfte
Hilton is a quaint little village in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. It is located under 100 kilometres from Durban (the largest city in the province) and roughly 10 kilometres from Pietermaritzburg, which is often considered the gateway to the Midlands.
The Midlands refers to a lush area of KwaZulu Natal which lies in the foothills of the famous Drakensberg Mountain Range. This is an imposing land form which adds greatly to the scenic beauty of the area and contrasts with the undulating nature of the rest of the landscape.
Hilton itself is a small town characterised by hedge-lined lanes and pretty gardens. In the wet season (November to February), when thunder storms and rolling mists are common, Hilton can be extremely reminiscent of a village in the English countryside, rather than a town at the end of Africa! It lies on the edge of the escarpment which overlooks Pietermaritzburg and the Winterskloof Valley, which is home to an array of indigenous flora, winding lanes and good cycling routes.
Attractions include the Midlands Meander and Howick Falls, which are located in the larger town of Howick to the north west of Hilton. Hilton has been incorporated into the municipality of Howick.
The Midlands Meander is a tourist initiative by Midlands locals and is an easy route which incorporates a number of small towns and takes visitors through a beautiful landscape of rolling green hills and agricultural land. The area is home to many eccentric and creative individuals, artists, poets and authors among them. There are artisanal outlets along the route where you can buy anything from cheese to ceramics.
The area around Hilton is ripe for outdoor enthusiasts to explore, with many nature conservancies and other open space available for cycling, hiking and horse-riding.
