Howick Unterkünfte
Howick is a small town located 80km from Durban in KwaZulu Natal. It has a population of around 12 000 and the nearest city is Pietermaritzburg.
The town experiences warm summers and cool, dry winters, meaning it is pleasant all year round – perfect for those wishing to explore the Midlands Meander in the low season. Despite being the Midlands hub and business centre for the uMngeni region’s municipality, it maintains its small town charm.
The town has two major claims to fame, the first being Howick Falls. As it happens, Howick is situated at a point on the uMngeni River where the river and its tributaries converge, descending down the plateau, from their origins in the Drakensberg Mountains to the Indian Ocean, in a number of striking waterfalls. Howick Falls is by far the largest, with a height reaching 100 metres. For this reason the Zulu people in the area named it KwaNogkaza, which means ‘Place of the Tall One’. These falls are made even more notable by the fact that they are located within the actual town! Numerous falls outside of town are also worthy of a visit.
Howick’s other claim to fame is the Midmar Dam. The dam is located just outside of town and is not only an attractive recreational area, but also the home of the world’s largest open water swim. The Midmar Mile happens annually in February attracting about 13 000 professional and amateur swimmers. At other times of the year, the Midmar Dam offers water sport fanatics a suitable place for water-skiing, wake-boarding and whatever other activities you can imagine. It is also a popular place for recreational fishing enthusiasts.
Howick lies in the Natal Midlands, a picturesque area with undulating hills and forests. Needless to say there are some great hikes in the area and scenic picnic spots second to none. Furthermore, the Midlands Meander is a tourist route dotted with quaint restaurants, small shops selling handmade products such as blown-glass ornaments and embroidered linen.
If you are planning a trip to KwaZulu Natal, do not forget to visit Howick. You won’t regret it.
