Hondeklipbaai Verblyf
Hondeklipbaai, which means ‘Dog Stone Bay’ in English, is a tiny settlement on the West Coast of South Africa. It is located 95 kilometres south west of Springbok, the last town on the N7 road before you reach Namibia.
The town has a long history, beginning in the 1800’s. It was established because of its natural harbour, which could be used to transport the copper ore which was being mined in surrounding Namaqualand regions. It was named after a rock on the coast which supposedly resembles a dog. A visit to the rock will reveal that the resemblance is abstract.
After the copper mining days, the town became a hub for the surrounding diamond-mining efforts and there existed briefly a crayfish factory. However, over the years few industries have stuck and the town remains a largely undeveloped settlement, where life for locals is challenging to say the least. However, its stark, wild landscape and lack of commercial attention are the very things which now make it attractive to visitors.
Hondeklipbaai lies in a semi-arid region which is sparsely populated where plants, humans and other animals are concerned. The Atlantic Ocean which hugs its 14 or so kilometres of coastline is icy cold but nutritious for the sea creatures which inhabit it, and despite the colour palette of the area being dominated by greys, whites and blues for most of the year, spring time (August to October) yields an array of colourful flowers scattered across the flat landscape.
Visiting Hondeklipbaai promises to be a rejuvenating experience and one can keep occupied by investigating the tidal pools, observing the sea birds like sandpipers, gulls and endangered oystercatchers and collecting mussels and crayfish (if you have a license). You can also visit some of the landmarks, stroll along the coast or just enjoy the sense of peace and tranquillity the place offers.
