Garies Verblyf
Garies is a small agricultural town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It is located 112 kilometres south of Springbok, which is the capital city of the Namaqualand District that Garies Falls into.
The settlement known as Garies is little more than a village. It consists of a single long road with a cluster of houses on both sides, and a church. There are some shops too which cater to the basic and general needs of the population. Garies, the epitome of a small town, sits on the banks of the dry Garies stream. To the East of the village is the Kamiesberg Mountain Range which overlooks the arid landscape surrounding Garies.
Just south of the village is a memorial commemorating a British officer who was killed in the Anglo Boer War during a fight with the Boer troops of General Manie Maritz.
While there is admittedly little that happens in Garies for most of the year, the town comes to life each spring. A carpet-like display of bright colourful flowers springs up and covers the ground of Garies during the months of August - October. In amongst these is the Namaqua daisy characterised by its vibrant orange petals.
An attraction close to Garies is the Namaqua National Park, which is home to porcupines, butterflies and long-tongued flies that celebrate with gusto amidst the abundant flowers. It is also home to the world's smallest tortoise, the Namaqua speckled padloper. The park is located in one of only two arid biodiversity locations.
Other attractions near Garies are, Letterklip which is comprised of a number of giant, megalithic boulders that are named after some of Namaqualand's early adventurers. There is also the Rooiberg Hiking Trail up the nearby Rooiberg Mountains.
Garies is a perfect little haven for nature lovers who wanting to get away and be surrounded by pure, virtually untouched beauty.
