Kakamas Verblyf
The small town of Kakamas is situated in South Africa’s beautiful, sparsely populated Northern Cape. The town is blessed with a wealth of history, as well as a picturesque setting on the banks of the Orange River. Established in the late 1800’s, its existence harks back over 200 years, and evidence of the original settlers can still be seen.
The town came into existence thanks to the Dutch Reformed Church which set up a colony of farmers who’d lost everything they had to drought. In exchange for their labour on an irrigation project, they were given land which then benefitted from the water system. Those farms flourished and today the fertile valley is known for its vineyards, peach orchards, cotton and lucerne. The hand-built canals, tunnels and ancient water wheels are still in use and are of particular interest to those with an engineering bent.
The town lies at the intersection of the N14, which connects Upington to the coast, and the R64, which goes northwards to the Augrabies Falls National Park. It is also in the heart of the Riemvasmaak Community Conservancy, one of the first areas to be returned to its original inhabitants after the fall of Apartheid. This area constitutes part of the Kalahari, and just beyond the bounds of the settlement’s fertile ground, the landscape reverts to its brown, dry hills dotted with wild fig and quiver trees.
Among the Kakamas attractions are hiking, mountain bike and 4x4 trails, the Riemvasmaak Hot Springs, the aforementioned waterways and the nearby Augrabies Falls – more than enough to keep you occupied for a few days.
