Maputo Unterkünfte
The city of Maputo is located in the Mozambican province of the same name. The city is located on the east coast of the country, and rests on Delagoa Bay. It is a very active port city which not only manufactures a number of its own products, but exports many more too from all over the country. Maputo is also known for its aesthetics, which consist largely of beautiful (if slightly dilapidated) colonial architecture. The lovely old buildings, some of which are designed by big-name architects, make for fantastic photo opportunities, especially given the fact that many have seen better days.
Maputo is only about 120 kilometres from the South African border, and much closer still to some of Mozambique’s most popular tourist areas. The city has its roots in the colonial area when Portugal still ruled the country. It was officially established in 1850, after a Portuguese fort was built on the bay. It was named Lourenço Marques after the Portuguese navigator who first stepped foot on the coast. Mozambique gained independence in 1975, when the city’s name was changed to Maputo.
Maputo has a number of interesting features and points of interest which most visitors to the city find hard to resist. One such place is the Central Train Station (abbreviated to CFM in Portuguese), whose architecture is worth writing home about (Gustav Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame, had a hand in its design). The National Art Museum has a small but beautiful collection of Mozambican art, and the Mercado Central, which is a lively market selling anything and everything is a great place to absorb a bit of local culture.
While the city has a lot to offer , most people use it as a jumping off point for popular beaches like Ponta do Ouro and Catembe which are nearby.
