Ponta d'Ouro Unterkünfte
Ponta d'Ouro is located in southern Mozambique and is 10 kilometres from the South African border post at Koffie Bay, in KwaZulu-Natal. Travellers making their way through the post towards Ponta d'Ouro are advised to drive in 4x4 vehicles as the roads are untarred and covered in sand.
Ponta d'Ouro, which means ‘tip of gold’, was named by Portuguese explorers who thought that gold could be found in the resort’s dunes. What they found instead were mounds of black titanium.
The town is surrounded by sea, sand dunes and casuarina trees, and is the ideal beach getaway. During season, Ponta do Ouro becomes a hive of activity as South African tourists travel to the holiday destination.
There are only a handful of shops in Ponta d'Ouro, including a hardware store and convenience shops. However, shoppers looking for fresh produce can purchase bread, fruit, and vegetables at the daily morning market. If you’re looking to purchase memorabilia to remember your holiday by, there are also several cantinas (little shops) which sell an array of trinkets and curios.
Holidaymakers looking to pamper themselves can do so at the Salon @ Praia. The health and beauty centre offers many treatment packages which will help you to relax.
Due to the many world renowned reefs situated in the area, Ponta d'Ouro is popular in the scuba diving community. Bread Loaf is ideal for divers who are new to the scene and is home to reef sharks, vibrantly coloured corals, eels, and an abundance of fish.
Holiday makers who wish to swim with dolphins can book an ocean safari with Dolphin Encounters. The initiative is a research facility which pioneered in-water dolphin interactions in the 1990's. Their aims are to educate the public about conservation and to boost eco-tourism in Mozambique.
