Mbabane Unterkünfte
Mbabane is the capital city of Swaziland, the small landlocked kingdom which borders Mozambique as well as the South African provinces of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal. The country is tiny, roughly 200 kilometres by 130 kilometres. It is one of the last remaining absolute monarchies in the world.
Mbabane, which is pronounced ‘Mbuhbun,’ lies on the Mbabane River and its tributary, the Polinjane River. Both the tiny city (whose population is below 100 000) and the river are named after Chief Mbabane Kunene who lived in the area when the British settlers first arrived there. The city was established in 1903.
Mbabane and the country of Swaziland as a whole are greatly dependent on the export of sugar to South Africa and on tourism. For this reason English is widely spoken, despite siSwati being the first language for many of Mbabane’s residents. Speaking of tourism, Mbabane is probably the best place from which to explore the rest of the country. The nearest border post, Ngwenya-Oshoek lies 20 kilometres to the west of Mbabane and is the most popular border post between Swaziland and South Africa.
Some of the attractions around Mbabane include the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and Lobamba. Mlilwane is the country’s premier wildlife reserve and a haven for hikers, mountain bikers and horse-riders. It is south of Mbabane. The royal village of Lobamba is especially worthy of a visit if the annual Umhlanga or Ncwala ceremonies are taking place.
Mbabane experiences a humid, subtropical climate, but owing to its altitude (1243 metres) the conditions are milder than other subtropical climates.
