Piet Retief Unterkünfte
The town of Piet Retief is a historical little place with a population of less than 60 000 people. It is situated in the far east of South Africa in the province of Mpumalanga. The town is conveniently situated on the N2 freeway which takes you to Ermelo. It is quite a pretty place, and convenient too for an overnight stop on a long road trip.
Piet Retief was first established in 1883, during the time of the Voortrekkers. It was named after the Voortrekker leader of the same name. The original Piet Retief was killed by a tribe of Zulu people under the order of the notorious Zulu chief, King Dingane. He met this fate for trying to settle on their territory. For a brief period in history, the town and its surroundings was an independent state, but it was soon incorporated into the greater South African Republic, as it was then known. It was named a municipality in 1932.
The town lies very close to the border with Swaziland as well as the Mpumalanga – KwaZulu Natal border. Furthermore, its position on a major transport route makes it the ideal place for an overnight stop for both business and leisure travellers.
The area in which the town is situated experiences a high rainfall, making it a good spot for forestry. Indeed timber, paper and wattle-bark production are some of the town’s main income streams. Mining is also practised in the region, with mica, kaolin and iron-mining being the most common extracts.
