Meyerspark is characterised by the wondrous sights of beautifully maintained cottages and mansions, complete with enchanting, fairy-tale-like gardens and well-manicured lawns. While in close proximity to central Pretoria, Meyerspark is celebrated for its quiet nature and peaceful surroundings.
Notable highlights for holiday makers, or locals in search of solitude, are visits to the Botanical Gardens. One is encouraged to dedicate an entire day of exploring and meandering through the 50-hectare park. Upon various nature trails, walkers will spot plants that are found only in South Africa, various species of birds soaring the skies and nesting in trees, and families sprawled on the grass, relaxing and enjoying lazy afternoon picnics. Visitors who are in the mood for a mid-morning pot of tea can enjoy a cuppa and a scone at the onsite restaurant. Bring you children along as there is a designated play area.
While Meyerpark is immersed in its natural surroundings, various shopping malls and business complexes are found close by. The Watermeyer Park Shopping Centre is a haven for shopaholics who are on the prowl for new fashions, foodies who are looking to enjoy good food and coffees at restaurants, cafes and bistros, and movie-lovers who are looking to watch newly released flicks.
One’s stay in Meyer’s Park would be incomplete without having visited Sammy Park’s Museum. This landmark is not your average museum, but is a place where you can explore all the nooks and crannies of the 48-roomed Victorian-style house. This prestigious homestead was the place of residency for South Africa’s first successful industrialist and entrepreneur, Sammy Mark’s, his wife Bertha, and their brood of nine children. Following his death in 1991, the house stood vacant before it was sold to the Natural Cultural History Museum in 1995.
Another nearby attraction is the Voortrekker Monument, a landmark that was built to honour the Voortrekkers. They were a group of pioneers who left the Cape to embark on an expedition (from 1835-1854) now referred to as the ‘Great Trek’. The museum receives more than 20 000 visitors annually. Those who are interested in learning more about the Voortrekker’s epic journey will find their visit here worthwhile.
