Mpumalanga Unterkünfte - 30
Mpumalanga is one of South Africa’s smallest provinces, situated in the north-east of the country. However, it boasts some spectacular scenery and despite its small size, a host of outdoor activities. It’s most famous draw card is the Kruger National Park. As such, Mpumalanga is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and those wishing to get a glimpse of wildlife.
Mpumalanga shares international borders with Mozambique and Swaziland as well as provincial borders with Limpopo, Gauteng, the Free State and KwaZulu Natal. It is divided down its centre by the Drakensberg Mountain Range.
To the west lies the escarpment, a region of high-altitude grassland known as the highveld and to the east is the subtropical lowveld. Owing to its altitude, the Highveld is colder and drier while the lowveld is warmer and more humid. Mpumalanga receives summer rainfall.
The province is home to some awesome attractions, the Kruger National Park being the one that springs to mind immediately. The southern half of the park is located in Mpumalanga, making the province a great base for exploring South Africa’s Big 5 – rhinoceros, elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard.
The Blyde River Canyon, the world’s 3rd deepest canyon, offers amazing sites. For the adrenaline junkie, white water rafting and zip-lining is on offer. At God’s Window, you can stand at the edge of the escarpment and look down over the lowveld. It’s been said that on a clear day you can see as far as Mozambique.
Throughout Mpumalanga there are great opportunities for hiking and mountain-biking. A number of caves are also interesting to visit and the San rock art in the region will provide a glimpse into the San way of life.
Small towns like Pilgrim’s Rest encapture the Gold Rush era of the 1870’s and cast a light on Mpumalanga’s current mining industry.
This province may be small but it is full of things to do and is easily accessible. Is your imagination captured?
