Secunda Unterkünfte
Secunda is a small city which lies in the coal mining region of South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. It is an industrial city located less than 200 kilometres from Johannesburg and Pretoria respectively, and is the home of some of Sasol’s oil refineries. For non-coal-related activities there are a number of entertainment complexes to keep you occupied in your downtime.
The name Secunda is derived from the Latin word for ‘second’ and was given to the town because it’s home to the second extraction refinery, which produces oil from coal, in South Africa (after Sasolburg).
As you may have surmised, Secunda is largely a destination for people doing business related to the coal mines. Almost everything in the city links back to the mines after all. The definitive features of Secunda for example, are the cooling towers, the metal constructions and high chimneys which are all signatures of the coal industry. Even though the refineries are outside of town, they are a noticeable aspect of the landscape and the sound sometimes reaches the city too.
Secunda generally has good weather, with mild summers and cold winters (frost often forms) but sunny skies. This sunny weather makes the Secunda Waterfront a pleasant place to spend your time off. There are numerous restaurants in the complex as well as indoor cricket, and a ten-pin bowling alley among other things.
The other place to go for entertainment is the Graceland casino complex, whose design is inspired by Elvis’ home and style. There are slots and gaming tables, restaurants, a golf course and some fun activities for kids too such a go-karts.
