Mtunzini Accommodatie
Mtunzini is a small coastal village on the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal. It lies to the south west of Richard’s Bay and is a 90 minute drive north of Durban, along the N2 highway. The village offers visitors the best of both worlds as its size and setting creates a sense of being far far away from civilisation, and yet it is just a skip hop and a jump away from a major transport link and some of the provinces largest cities.
The town’s name is derived from the Zulu word Emthunzini, which means ‘place in the shade’ and refers to the milkwood-shaded spot where the famous white Zulu chief, John Dunn had meetings with the elders. The town and surrounding areas are just as lush today as they were back then, with a variety of vegetation being supported by the humid, subtropical climate.
One of the most notable species in the area is the raphia palm, one of 6 indigenous palm species in South Africa. There is a small cluster of them within walking distance of the town, where one can spot rare palm nut vultures. The palms are accessed via a timber boardwalk which winds through a swamp forest.
Mtunzini is a relaxed little town where a car is unnecessary. If you like a more active holiday, there is plenty to do, from golfing, fishing and water-skiing to surfing and kayaking. Nearby are countless Zulu villages which offer an immersive cultural experience, while certain battlefield sites add a historical aspect to the area.
Mtunzini village looks out over the river, the Umlalazi Nature Reserve and the sea, offering a setting which can’t be beaten. If you are looking to really unwind, Mtunzini is the place for you!

Nice break-away town

Mtunzini
This was a stay that we will always look back to with good memories. The town is clean, attractive and safe. We went for long walks and enjoyed very reasonably priced local food. It is very central to many interesting places.

Mtunzini
A peaceful small community. Also, being a nature reserve it is well kept and green - ideal for a getaway. The beach felt very private.

Mtunzini
The area is lovely. It is small town, but has everything you could need. There is a Spar and various restaurants. We frequented the Fat Cat coffee shop and were very pleased with the food there. The only draw-back is that you have to pay for access to the beach, but it is fortunately only R20pp, which is doable. A very quaint little town.

Mtunzini
Beautiful place. Great for getting away for a peaceful and relaxing stay. The restaurants on the other hand are scarce but very reasonable. I believe there are 3 in total.
