Nieu Bethesda is a tiny town in the heart of the Great Karoo. You will find it 50 kilometres outside the larger town of Graaff Reinet, the 5th oldest town in South Africa. Both are located in the province of the Eastern Cape.
Nieu Bethesda is set in an arid, semi-desert landscape with the Kompasberg (Compass Mountain) towering over it. The stark contrast between flat desert and imposing mountain is quite something, and that is just a taster of what to expect from Nieu Bethesda.
The town is so small that not even a bank or petrol station exists in the town. For some reason the lack of these two seemingly basic amenities lend the town a truly rural feel, which give one a sense of really having escaped the well-trodden path! Add to this the fresh air, sunny skies, and at night, an incredible expanse of stars, and you have what many people would describe as heaven.
Nieu Bethesda is a quirky settlement, which was initially developed (as many of the small Karoo towns were) as a church town, and the Dutch Reformed Church still stands. It was founded in 1875 and gained municipal status in 1886. It soon developed into a thriving little agricultural town, whose economy depended on angora goats and sheep. These days though, it is the creative and sometimes eccentric population which attracts tourism, the town’s main economic force.
The late Helen Martins’ Owl House is the most well-known of these artsy enclaves in the town, with a garden brimming with cement sculptures decorated with different coloured glass and bottles. As the name implies, owls are a strong theme. There are also craft shops and numerous small galleries to get stuck into on your visit.
