Nyanga is a small tourist town in the north east of Zimbabwe, lying in a district if the same name in Manicaland province. It is very close to the Zimbabwe/Mozambique border, about 265 kilometres east of Harare, the Zimbabwean capital city and 115 kilometres from Mutare, the closest 'big city' to the settlement.
Nyanga lies at 1679 metres above sea level on Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands. There are number of things to note about the small town of Nyanga. For starters, it is home to one of the largest military training bases in the country, drawing trainees from various locations in Africa. Its presence is in sharp contrast to the town's image as an exciting, fun tourist haven. However, it somehow works out, probably because the tourist attractions in the area outweigh the idea of the military base's existence.
The town's main claims to fame are Mount Nyangani, easily visible from Nyanga, despite its 20 kilometre distance south of the town. To the south east of the town is another major attraction, the Nyanga National Park. The national park is home to a number of fascinating and informative archaeological ruins from the stone and iron ages. These include old forts, terraces and other structures. The park is also home to the Matarazi Falls, which at 760 metres is Zimbabwe's highest waterfall.
Mount Nyangani's highest peak reaches 2600 metres, making it Zimbabwe's tallest mountain. The incredible hiking on this mountain appeals to the adventurer in anyone and the trails on mount Nyangani are one of the major reasons people visit the area.
The area in and around Nyanga is full of other attractions and activities too, such as fishing and golfing and a visit to the region will not certainly not leave visitors bored!
