Ormonde Verblyf

The modest suburb of Ormonde is found in Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest and wealthiest city. The suburb is found in the south west of the city limits and is close to some of Joburg’s most popular attractions.

Despite being located in the so-called ‘City of Gold’, Ormonde is a pleasant, but not overly wealthy area. It is populated by small, neat houses and there are plenty of housing complexes, low-level apartment blocks and evidence of town-planning as opposed to an organic sprawl. What makes it different from Johannesburg’s CBD and other more developed parts of the city, like Sandton, is that open spaces are common in Ormonde and the area is much less concentrated with buildings!

However, although the atmosphere is Ormonde is so different, it is in fact easy to get into the centre. The M1 highway, which acts as the areas eastern boundary, and is easily accessible from all parts of the suburb, connects Ormonde to the more central parts of Johannesburg, like the rapidly gentrifying Newtown. Its proximity to the OR Tambo International Airport is another draw card – you can get there within 15minutes.

Gold Reef City, a theme park and museum, and one of Johannesburg’s most well-known tourist attractions is situated just north of Ormonde and is also easily accessible. While the major attraction is the topsy turvy theme-park rides, Gold Reef City also offers an interesting glimpse into life during the initial gold-mining era. The museum demonstrates how gold was sifted (you can even try it out yourself), there is a replica of a mining foreman’s house, and you can even take a tour underground into a decommissioned mine-shaft.

The excellent Apartheid Museum, which casts a light on an uglier but more recent period in South Africa’s history, is situated in Ormonde, and Soweto, Johannesburg’s largest township is just outside the suburb. Here you can try famous Chisa Nyama and get a glimpse into another way of life.
