Pinetown is an up and coming residential area to the west of Durban in KwaZulu Natal. It is located about 16 kilometres from the heart of Durban and is between the affluent areas of Kloof and Westville. The city’s picturesque Berea area is no more than a 10 minute drive away.
Pinetown, just like areas such as Umhlanga, began life as an independent town and as the city of Durban expanded, it was incorporated into the eThekwini Municipality, that is, greater Durban. Pinetown was originally established back in the early 1850’s because it lay in a convenient position on the main Durban-Pietermaritzburg wagon route. It was named after the then governor of Natal, Benjamin Pine.
For many years Pinetown was touted as a ‘light industrial’ town, and to this day is home to a number of factory complexes and warehouses. It is also known as a ‘motor town’ thanks to the many car dealerships which line the main road. Having said all this though it cannot be ignored that Pinetown’s popularity as a residential suburb has grown exponentially in recent years and it is a pleasant place to live and visit.
Despite its official status as a suburb of Durban, Pinetown maintains some of its independent nature and is self-sufficient as the schools, hospitals and shopping centres will attest. It even has some unique attractions, such as the New Germany Nature Reserve, which is home to sections of forest, grassland and even some protea species as well as small mammals like duiker and mongooses. It is also an excellent place for bird-watching.
Pinetown is conveniently located near the M16 highway and other important transport links and is close to the attractions and business areas in Durban.
