Rawsonville Verblyf

The small town of Rawsonville is located in a picturesque part of South Africa’s Western Cape. Only 120 kilometres from Cape Town and roughly 15 kilometres from Worcester, the town, which is just off the N1 highway, is easily accessible and offers myriad attractions.

Rawsonville was established in the 1950’s on a farm known as Aan-de-Smalblaar. The reason for its development was the regular flooding of the Breed River. In the winter months, the rainfall would sometimes cause the river to burst its banks, leaving the spread-out farming communities isolated from Worcester, and thus from any supplies and other resources. It was decided that a new Hamlet be built to better serve the surrounding farming communities, a role which Rawsonville fills to this day. The town was named after William Rawson, the Cape Colonial Secretary at the time.

Rawsonville and its surrounds is primarily a farming area where fruit and the production of wine are the most common endeavours. The proliferation of wine farms however, combined with the beautiful scenery, including the towering Du Toitskloof Mountains, means that the Rawsonville area is becoming more and more popular with local tourists.

One of the main attractions in the area is the Breedekloof Wine Route, at whose heart Rawsonville lies. The route consists of 22 wine estates and cellars, producing some of South Africa’s best wines. Most of these estates are open for tastings and sales.

The area is also known for its brandy distilleries, many of which also offer tours and tastings. A short distance down the road you’ll find charming little towns like Robertson, which is filled with quaint restaurants and pretty architecture, and the Breede River itself which is great for swimming and fishing.

The surrounding mountains make for great hiking and mountain biking too, ensuring that you will never be bored when visiting the Rawsonville area.
