Villiersdorp Verblyf
The town of Villiersdorp is a small, quaintsettlement in the Overberg region of the Western Cape. The surroundingmountains and farmlands provide a tranquil and especially scenic setting whileits short distance from Cape Town and the many activities to be had nearbyensure that it is a convenient and fun destination to visit, no matter who youare.
Established in 1943, Villiersdorp, whosecurrent population is just over 10 000, was named after its foundingfather Veldkornet (field cornet) PH de Villiers. De Villiers was a farmer inthe region and was part of the group that established the Villiersdorp Valleyas a hotspot for fruit farming.
The town and its surrounding areasexperience a pleasant Mediterranean climate of cool wet winters, and warm drysummers. This supports a variety of deciduous fruit species such as apricots,pears, peaches, apples and onion, which are grown in the valley and exported. Viticultureis also practised with estates such as Villiersdorp Cellars (established in 1922,making it the oldest in the area) and Die Huis van Anja (a boutique cellar)wine tastings, tours and overall excellent value, thanks to the Villiersdorpwine region being less commercialised than its neighbours.
The tame climate also provides many opportunitiesfor exploring outdoors, and with the Sneeukop, Aasvoel and Bokkop Mountainssurrounding the village, and the Theewaterskloof Dam just outside it, there area wide number of options to indulge in, from hiking and mountain biking towater sports and fishing.
Villiersdorp is a pretty town, lined with oaktrees and filled with old buildings. Perhaps the best bit though, is that it isonly an
hour or so outside of Cape Town.
