Richards Bay Logement
Richards Bay offers visitors a wide variety of options from self-catering cottages, to budget accommodation and luxury hotels to hotels in the city centre. Its close proximity to interesting regions as well as its pristine beaches make it a good place to stop over on a South African road trip.
Richards Bay is situated in northern part of KwaZulu Natal – so far north in fact that the Mozambique border is just a few hours away. It is situated on the coast and as such experiences slightly less extreme temperature fluctuations than inland destinations. The Richard’s Bay climate is subtropical with hot humid summers and warm, drier winters. The warm Indian Ocean ensures that swimming is possible all year ‘round.
Richards Bay’s main claim to fame is as an industrial town, having started its life as a harbour. Today it is a deep sea harbour and hub of mining activity. The dunes around the town, which lies 180 kilometres north of Durban, are mined for coal, titanium and iron. But despite the mining activity and industrial nature of the place, one can still have a good time in Richards Bay.
The city is situated on a coastal plain, meaning the area is largely flat. It is dotted with unique coastal dune forest but of course, the glistening white beaches steal the show. Alkanstrand Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Richards Bay due to its Blue Flag status. The water is pleasantly warm and safe to swim in and the beach is spotlessly clean. It is popular amongst sun worshippers, walkers and joggers.
The consistent wind received by this section of the KwaZulu Natal coast make Richards Bay a hot kite-surfing spot too, while the Richard’s Bay Estuary is a great place for bird lovers to relax and tick off some species from their ‘must-see’ lists. To make it even more of a convenient spot to holiday, Richards Bay has a small airport catering for tourists.
Whether for work or play, a trip to Richard’s Bay will not disappoint.
