Ulundi Logement
The town of Ulundi is a small settlement in the heart of the Zululand region of KwaZulu Natal. It lies in a beautifully scenic valley, close to the White Mfolozi River, and is close to game reserves and other interesting sites. While the town itself may seem unremarkable the area is rich in cultural history and coming here will certainly shed light on the history of South Africa’s indigenous Zulu people.
Ulundi sits on the R66, a regional road connected to the N2 freeway. It lies between the towns of Melmoth and Nongoma. It lies in northern KwaZulu Natal and shares similar latitude to areas like the La Lucia Wetlands. It is north west of Richards Bay, but despite being inland experiences the same humid subtropical climate.
When people speak of the cultural and historical value of the area where Ulundi is found, they aren’t exaggerating. The hills and valleys around the town were the stomping grounds of the young Shaka, who grew up to be one of the most infamous kings the Zulu kingdom has ever known. Ulundi itself was established by King Cetshwayo in the early 1870’s and officially named uluNdi. As was tradition, a new capital of the Zulu nation was declared when the new king came into power.
Later the town saw battles between the British and the Zulus in the famous Battle of Ulundi, and more recently it acted as the capital city of the Apartheid Bantustan, Kwazulu.
Today visitors will enjoy the stunning scenery as well as be enthralled by all the history in the area. Furthermore, the eMakhosini Ophate Heritage Park is a natural area devoted to protecting the endangered oribi antelope, and is also the site where many of the Zulu nation’s great leaders were buried.
