Rivonia Verblyf
Rivonia is a pleasant, well-to-do area in the Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg. It lies just south of the N1 Western Bypass route, which provides an excellent transport link to other parts of the city. Rivonia is neat suburb with plenty of trees, the odd greenbelt and pretty, well-maintained property which are cared for with zest by their upper to middle class residents. Do not be fooled by it’s suburban appearance thou, as there are many fine hotels in Rivonia for the discerning business traveller.
Rivonia neighbours the affluent suburb of Bryanston as well areas like Edenburg and Sunninghill. A major leg up in the status stakes can be awarded to Rivonia as it falls within the greater Sandton area – which boasts the highest concentration of wealth in Johannesburg, South Africa’s commercial capital.
The suburb is a good base for visitors to Johannesburg thanks to its visually appealing nature and its proud declaration of ‘location, location, location’- being situated within Sandton means that Johannesburg’s finest tourist and business attractions are but a stone’s throw away. The Sandton City shopping mall for example is a prestigious establishment and is one of Africa’s largest shopping malls. The Sandton Convention Centre is located within a block of the mall and Nelson Mandela Square, a hub of indoor-outdoor restaurants and coffee shops is right there too.

Rivonia also has historical relevance as it is home to the notorious Liliesleaf farm. Liliesleaf was used by the African National Congress (ANC) as a secret meeting place during the Apartheid years. In 1963, 19 ANC members were arrested by the Apartheid government for their involvement in ‘guerrilla activities’. The arrests resulted in the famous Rivonia Trial.
As you can see, Rivonia offers a little bit of everything, and its excellent location makes it the perfect base for both business and leisure travellers.
